Light Jet — Phenom 300, Citation CJ3+

If private aviation has a default setting, it's the light jet. Fast enough to cruise with the airlines, small enough to keep hourly rates in the mid-four-figures, and sized perfectly for the 2–6 passengers that make up most charter bookings.

The Embraer Phenom 300 — the world's most-delivered business jet for over a decade — defines the class: 45,000 feet, 500 mph, and a cabin that borrows tricks from jets twice its price. On stages of one to three hours, nothing matches a light jet's cost-per-mile.

When the light jet is the right call

The light jet is the right answer for stages between roughly 300 and 1,500 miles with up to six passengers: LA–Vegas, New York–Florida in summer, Dallas–Chicago, London–Nice. Beyond three hours in the air, or with seven-plus passengers and lots of luggage, step up to a midsize — the price gap narrows fast on longer stages.

Inside the cabin

Six to eight seats in a club configuration, a belted lavatory seat on some airframes and a proper enclosed lav on the Phenom 300 and CJ3+. Cabin height runs about 4'11" — you walk bent, sit comfortably. Wi-Fi is common but confirm it; baggage holds swallow golf bags and ski gear.

The aircraft you'll actually be quoted

AircraftHourly rateWhy it matters
Embraer Phenom 300E$3,800–5,500/hClass benchmark — fastest, freshest fleet, best lav
Cessna Citation CJ3+$3,500–4,900/hEfficient, reliable, huge operator base
HondaJet Elite II$3,500–4,800/hOver-wing engines = quietest cabin in class
Learjet 75 Liberty$4,200–5,500/hFast cruise, executive suite layout

These hourly figures describe individual airframes, not the category, and can sit slightly outside the $3,500–$5,500 band above — an older airframe prices below it, a brand-new one above. Our estimates always use the category band; see the methodology.

Light Jet charter: common questions

How much does a light jet cost per hour?

$3,500–$5,500 per flight hour on our US and Canadian rate bands. Because charter bills a two-hour minimum, that is also roughly what a short flight costs in total — Los Angeles to Las Vegas estimates at $7,000 – $11,000.

How many people fit on a light jet?

Six to eight seats depending on the airframe and layout. Six adults with weekend luggage is the comfortable planning number; eight works for short hops with light bags.

Can a light jet fly coast to coast?

Not nonstop. Ranges top out around 1,800–2,000 miles, so a transcontinental trip needs a fuel stop — about 45 minutes. For nonstop coast-to-coast you want a super-midsize or heavy jet.
